Iste Confessor, patriarcha magnus,
De domo David generosus hæres,
Dignus auctoris, hominum vocari,
Est pater almus.

Qui manens justus, placitus supernis,
Regis æterni fuit almæ Matris
Sponsus et custos Mariæ pro nobis
Cuncta regentis.

Today is the feast of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin; together with the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin on the 25th this is one of the two days in Lent when the Masses of the feast will be sung with the Lenten feria being commemorated (rather than the other way around; the proper way to put this is that the rubrics class these two feasts in such a way that they outrank the Lenten feriae). The Mass of Saint Joseph in the Roman Missal is Iustus ut palma florebit; whether this is the Mass at Barroux, am not quite sure... it is. The livret for the Mass at Saint-Eugène is here (and, now that I think of it, the time is Paris hasn't yet changed, so Mass begins this week still at 1100 Pacific time).

My tenuous grasp of the (Roman) rubrics says that the Lenten feria should be commemorated i.e. its orations ought to be added after those of the Holy Patriarch and this is what is proposed in the livret at Saint-E. And this is done also at Barroux.

Because of the feast, at Matins only the final lesson is concerned with the Lenten cycle, from the Gospel according to Saint John, in which Our Lord in His righteous anger cleanses the Temple of the merchants.

Lectio 9
Commemoratio Feriae
Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem
Joannes 2:13-25.
In illo témpore: Prope erat Pascha Judæórum, et ascéndit Jesus Jerosólymam: et invénit in templo vendéntes boves, et oves, et colúmbas. Et réliqua.

Homilía sancti Augustíni Epíscopi
Tract. 10 in Joannem, post init.
Quæ opus habébant hómines in sacrifíciis illíus témporis.

The Gospel of the feast is from Saint Matthew, Cum esset desponsáta Mater Jesu María Joseph.

And so on-- there are eleven strophes.

M le Curé is celebrating Holy Mass this morning. I noticed yesterday at Vespers both that Fr Grodziski was acting as an acolyte and that there are new servers; it only now dawned on me that perhaps Fr G. is supervising the new fellows' training.

Introitus. Ps. 91, 13-14. Justus ut palma florébit: sicut cedrus Líbani multiplicábitur: plantátus in domo Dómini: in átriis domus Dei nostri. Ps. ibid., 2.

Eccli. 45, 1-6.

Graduale. Ps. 20, 4-5.
Dómine, prævenísti eum in benedictiónibus dulcédinis: posuísti in cápite ejus corónam de lápide pretióso. V. Vitam pétiit a te, et tribuísti ei longitúdinem diérum in sǽculum sǽculi.

Tractus. Ps. 111, 1-3.
Beátus vir, qui timet Dóminum: in mandátis ejus cupit nimis. V. Potens in terra erit semen ejus: generátio rectórum benedicétur. V. Glória et divítiæ in domo ejus: et justítia ejus manet in sǽculum sǽculi.

+ Sequéntia sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.
Matth. 1, 18-21.

In addition to the Offertory proper, the Schola will sing the 16th century hymn from the Premonstratensian Rite, Iste Confessor, patriarcha magnus.

Offertorium. Ps. 88, 25.

Secreta.
Débitum tibi, Dómine, nostræ réddimus servitútis, supplíciter exorántes: ut, suffrágiis beáti Joseph, Sponsi Genetrícis Fílii tui Jesu Christi, Dómini nostri, in nobis tua múnera tueáris, ob cujus venerándam festivitátem laudis tibi hóstias immolámus. Per eúndem Dóminum nostrum.

Secreta. Oblátum tibi, Dómine, sacrifícium vivíficet nos semper et múniat. Per Dóminum.

And in addition to the Communion proper, the Schola will sing the motet Ecce fidelis servus, op 54, for the feasts of Saint Joseph, of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), organist at La Madeleine, and the solemn antiphon O felicem virum beatum Ioseph composed ca 1400 by Jean de Charlier de Gerson (1358-1429), famed chancellor of the University of Paris and notable spiritual writer, advocate of devotion to Saint Joseph and of the feast of the Espousals of the Blessed Virgin and Saint Joseph. As I recall, he was also a 'conciliarist'-- but with much greatest justification than those who pretend to be partisans of 'synodality' in these latter days. Re-reading the Wikipedia article, oh! what a different world he lived in: yet there are certainly also a number of consonances.

Communio. Matth. 1, 20.

Postcommunio.
Adésto nobis, quǽsumus, miséricors Deus: et, intercedénte pro nobis beáto Joseph Confessóre, tua circa nos propitiátus dona custódi. Per Dóminum.

Postcommunio. Sumptis, Dómine, salutáribus sacraméntis : ad redemptiónis ætérnæ, quǽsumus, proficiámus augméntum. Per Dóminum.

Ipse Bethleem pariente Sponsa,
Vidit, agnovit Dominum jacentem,
Quem adoravit hominem Deumque
Cuncta levantem.

Sit salus Christo decus potestas,
Patris æterni Genito perenni,
Qui pro humani generis salute
Est homo factus.
Amen
