A lovely morning...

But I have errands to do occupying what looks to be my entire day, tsk, which fact doesn't dispose me to ebullient joy; am exaggerating about the extent of their imposition on my time: the trip to and from downtown for Holy Mass is a fixed 'imposition', after all, and the other, the appointment to receive the second shingles vaccination, is a once in a lifetime event (or so I'm told). My particular issue is that it is at 1130ish, thus making the morning revolve around it, as the late afternoon and early evening revolves around to- and fro-ing for 1730 Mass. Eh; such tribulations.... It is the feast of Pope Saint Martin I, Martyr; I shall have Holy Mass at Saint-E. on soon (since Mass was celebrated at 0030). Between 1955 and 1960 the Saturday Mass of Our Lady was said with commemoration of the Holy Martyr; there's almost zero chance that that arrangement will be remembered at Saint-Eugène.




Perhaps a bowl of oatmeal will put me in better spirits; after Prime. I had to take the Mass text from Introibo, which is a perfectly good source of course apart from the fact that they (necessarily, I suppose) include the Commune unius aut plurium Summorum Pontificum (an innovation of Pius XII and his liturgical lackeys or of the liturgical lackeys of Pius XII) so there are several alternatives for orations etc provided and they follow the questionably insane French practice of separating punctuation marks by a space from their corresponding texts. 

I'm sure those are violet vestments that M le Curé is wearing, hmm; but, as I know I've mentioned before, perhaps it is a trick of the laptop's display. My earlier notion that perhaps Saint-E. doesn't have a 'for ordinary use' set of red vestments I have discarded as incredibly improbable. But it is the Mass Si diligis me

Catching up with yesterday's accumulation of texts, I read this little essay of Dom Alcuin Reid OSB at New Liturgical Movement; Dr Kwasniewski had written about the subject (more or less, 'mental prayer' versus 'vocal prayer') earlier in the week.

... There is, really, no such thing as “monastic” spirituality; rather monastic spirituality is that of the Church herself-- of drinking deeply from the living streams of grace flowing through the Sacred Liturgy, including of course the reading of the Sacred Scriptures in their proper ecclesial context, including the mediation on them by the Fathers and the mediation of them by the Sacred Liturgy as developed in Tradition. Personal or private prayer wells up from this and, in silence and recollection, digests or contemplates the riches into which the Church immerses us in her Sacred Liturgy. This is Christian prayer, liturgical and private, connected and integral. The two should be connected....

It is now overcast, preparing at some point to rain, and 44 degrees F. I must go out to be vaccinated against the shingles in about half an hour.
