Yet another splendid morning before Dawn awakes...

With clear skies and the mid-40s of a perfect Autumn-- although it is possible that clouds of smoke may drift into the valley again later on, like yesterday; from perhaps 0800 until noon. Perhaps after midday I simply stopped noticing. Today is the feast of the martyr Pope Saint Callistus; the Old English Martyrology notes that,

Þes papa gesette on Rome þreora sæternesdaga fæsten on geare, ænne for hwætes genihtsumnesse, oðerne for wines, þriddan for eles.

This pope established at Rome three Saturday fasts in the year, one that the people might have a sufficiency of wheat, the second for a sufficiency of wine, and the third for a sufficiency of oil.

Bread, wine, oil-- that sounds to be about the proper order of priority, and the second Saturday fast would be particularly selfless on my part since I don't drink wine, ha. I wonder what the books say about these three Callixtine (or does Callistine sound better?) fasts, hmm. The Mass is Si diligis me.

Introitus. Ioann. 21, 15, 16 et 17. Si díligis me, Simon Petre, pasce agnos meos, pasce oves meas. Ps. 29, 2. Exaltábo te, Dómine, quóniam suscepísti me, nec delectásti inimícos. V/. Glória Patri.

Collecta.

Amen.

Graduale. Ps. 106, 32, 31. Exáltent eum in Ecclésia plebis : et in cáthedra seniórum laudent eum. V/.

Offertorium. Ierem. 1, 9-10.

Secreta. Mýstica nobis, Dómine, prosit oblátio: quæ nos et a reátibus nostris expédiat, et perpétua salvatióne confírmet. Per Dóminum.

Communionem. Matth. 16, 18. Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram ædificábo Ecclésiam meam.

Postcommunio. Quǽsumus, omnípotens Deus: ut reátus nostros múnera sacráta puríficent, et recte vivéndi nobis operéntur efféctum. Per Dóminum.

The glories of the morning were rather obscured by smokiness but not as badly as yesterday. I baked a cake (and had a taste, although since it's Friday I'll try to hold off on eating an entire piece of it until tomorrow); a gingerbread mix supplemented by more flour and sugar (to fill the glass baking dish I have which is not 9 x 13 inches but 13 x 17 inches, maybe, bigger than 9 x 13, anyway) and then eggs, apples, butter, and vanilla. Am now going to cook some cabbage patties (cabbage, onion, paprika, eggs, a bit of flour, and a touch of fake Parmesan cheese) for dinner, None being completed. I pat myself on the back at the success of my recent 'supplements' to cakes etc made from prepared mixes; they've all been delectable enough, although the one tasted of no particular flavor, no particular aroma, no particular savor at all, essence of crumby blandness with a vague hint of sweetness-- perfectly fine with my own tea certainly but not e.g. something to be served to guests.
