Dawn is having a difficult time of it this morning...

Although I have had to remind myself that sunrise isn't for another hour or so. Today is the feast of Pope Saint Linus, Martyr, first Successor of Saint Peter in the Chair of Rome, and the Friday Ember Day in September, feria sexta quattuor temporum Septembris. At Matins for the Ember Day, the lessons were from Saint Gregory (from his 33rd homily on the Gospel, 'post initium', the Breviary helpfully supplies, 'close to the beginning', in case I was checking my ever to hand volume of the Gregorian Homilies [am being facetious; alas, I don't have those books]) on the Gospel according to Saint Luke.


Luc 7:36-50 In illo témpore: Rogábat Jesum quidam de pharisǽis, ut manducáret cum illo. Et ingréssus domum pharisǽi discúbuit. Et réliqua.

 

At Matins for the feast of Saint Linus, the Gospel was also from Saint Luke, with lessons from Saint Gregory's 37th homily on the Gospels.

 

Luc 14:26-33 In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus turbis: Si quis venit ad me, et non odit patrem suum, et matrem, et uxórem, et fílios, et fratres, et soróres, adhuc autem et ánimam suam, non potest meus esse discípulus. Et réliqua.

 

I typically prefer the ferial Office of the Ember Days to a saint's Office that occurs on the same dates but, given Pope Saint Linus's great honor I said his Matins and Lauds earlier. Read Saint Gregory from both Matins, though the one post Horas. At Saint-Eugène, the Schola is singing for the Mass Laetetur cor quaerentium Deum of the Ember Day with the commemoration of the feast of Pope Saint Linus.







In the Pauline Rite, is also-- so the copies of the Martyrology I have aver-- the commemoration of Saints Zacharias and Elisabeth, the parents of Saint John the Baptist (Elisabeth being the cognata, cousin one supposes, of the Most Blessed Virgin, and Zacharias the prophet of the Nunc dimittis); tomorrow, the 24th, was in the Old English Calendar celebrated as the feast of the Conception of Saint John the Baptist. That feast in the East is more often celebrated on the 23rd and so I reckon the fabricators of the Pauline innovations chose today for the feast of Saint John's parents in a nod to the Byzantine custom. The feast of Saints Elisabeth and Zacharias was traditionally marked in the Martyrologium Romanum on November 5th; Saint Zacharias was called Sacerdos et Propheta Praecursoris Pater and Saint Elisabeth simply Praecursoris Mater. I don't know that it was ever commonly celebrated in many places.

Even a small number of singers can render the propers of the Mass creditably well, at least when they are fairly expert, as this morning.
